How to use the Lishi Kwikset Pick | Mr. Locksmith
For further info and to sign up for my new On-LIne “How to Pick Locks” Course go to Mr. Locksmith Coquitlam
The KW1 is for picking and reading 5 pin Kwikset locks and the KW5 is for 6 pin Kwikset picks.
The KW1 and KW5 picked the sample Kwikset locks as expected. One of the major advantages of the new Lishi Picks will be the ability to read the depths of the lock once it is picked and you will be able to make a key. However, if the locks have Master or construction pins the key will unlock and lock the lock but maybe not any other locks in the building. The New Lishi KW1 / KW5 picks are not designed and will not open Kwikset Smart Locks, yet lol.
The Lishi picks are well built and have a nice feel to them.
Picking method is classic Single Pin Picking (SPP). I do not foresee any problems with security pins, just will require a slightly different method of SPP to open. Actually, on Kwikset locks, I find them very easy to SPP security pins. (the binding pins cry out to be picked lol).
The new Mr. Lishi picks are expected to retail for $120 US each.
Mr. Lishi will soon release the Schlage SC1 5 pin and Schlage SC4 6 pin picks soon too.
Subscribe to my channel so you will get an update when I post the video of the new KW1 and KW5 in real field tests.

Lishi is a very good tool for locksmiths to figure out, because you have to use a Lishi tool and most the application you’re basically feeling the wafers, you’re going the binding wafer, you pick that one first and then you can go for the next binding wafer. That’s how you use the Mr. Lishi tools for automotive. They’ve come out with fantastic tools, they’ve come out with four tools now. One for 5-pin quick set, the 6-pin quick set, also the 5-pin Schlage, and the 6-pin Schlage.
So you can get KW1, KW5, or KW10 I will call it. The SC1 and the SC4. I had the pleasure of testing some of the prototypes. The tools made my Mr. Lishi, I tested the 5-pin and the 6-pin Mr. Lishi tools on quick set rocks, and they say it’ll do whether it has mushroom or spool pins or whatever. It’s exactly the same as when you’re using regular picks. You put the tool in and you’re feeling for which pin is binding first.
Single Pin Picking, SPP, or they like to call the field method or the French method. We’ll call it the SPP for today. Because of the tolerances within the lock and the inaccuracies of machining, we will find um let’s take a 5-pin one of the pins will be binding, and that’s the pin you pick first. And the tool is fantastic because it has all your spacing for quick set and the depths and we know they go most of the quick sets go 1 to 6. So you can feel with the tool you can find exactly which one is binding. You pick that one and then find your next one. So it’s not always 1-2-3-4-5, it could be the 3rd, the 5th, the 4th, the 2nd. You just remember which one’s binding first, and it’s not the same in all locks, because of the different machining processes.
Two reasons I love this tool: One, It’s going to teach how to become a better lock picker, because you’re gonna know exactly where you are to feel the binding pin, and the second thing is, my biggest pain in the butt for pick is 6-pin Schlage. With the SC4 tool, I didn’t have a chance to test that. I’ve got all the tools coming soon as their released, suppose to be sometime in March 2019, I will be doing a video right away.
2 points: 1 if you have many locks you can now make the key and it’ll open all the locks and then you can re-key them or do whatever the customer wants. The other thing is this is going to be fantastic for law enforcement and police. You can pick the lock on-site, make a key, and then leave.
Lishi’s calling this their Residential Original Lishi Tools by Mr. Lishi. Their 2-in-1 picks, they work and I hadn’t had a chance to try the Schlage I am looking forward to that. Lots of new videos coming soon.
Here’s something interesting. A lot of people are saying, “Oh this is a game changer, this is a fantastic tool.” Let’s get right to the facts here. Kwikset five pin deadbolts, the pin tumbler deadbolts, are the easiest locks in the world almost to pick. I can show you in 10 to 15 minutes you’re going to be able to pick these things and if you practice you’re going to be really good. This is not a game changer. There have been some tools available to law enforcement that did something similar. However, this is an inexpensive tool and it’s really cool, but here’s what I think about what it’s great for. It will give you the ability to learn to do single pin picking or SPP picking better.
You practice on the inexpensive locks and they have some other tools coming out, which will be for other locks, and they’ve already had one released in Australia for quite a while. It’s an interesting tool, it’s really cool, but it’s not going to turn a lousy picker who can’t pick a lock. You can’t just pick this thing up and pick instantly. I can show you in minutes how to pick Kwiksets and if you practice you can pick them.
This just can make your skillset better for picking. A set of picks or bobby pins or whatever, or whatever you want to use can pick a Kwikset no problem at all. These are simple locks. Doesn’t matter what they do. They can put in mushroom pins, spool pins, security pins, anything you want, these are simple, simple, simple. Same as the Weisers, simple, simple, simple. The Lishi pick cool, but not really a game changer. You can’t just buy this thing and you’ll be a great lock picker, you have to practice. I’m incorporating it into my training videos because I think this thing is great to help you get the feel. Because what it does, it shows you the exact position where the pins are and your exact depths, so you’re going to get a feel.
If you’re doing single pin picking you want to find that binding pin and this will help you develop that ability to sort of pick it. You’re going to know exactly where you are, but it will make you a better lock picker on the more complicated locks. This is just a tool, a training tool, but you can also use it to pick locks. Would I use this to pick as a locksmith, to go to a job and pick? Not really because o Kwiksets, if it’s a Kwikset it isn’t going to pick it. It’s so simple and easy. I’m going rake it, I’ll have this thing open in seconds, under a minute for sure unless it’s a malfunction then it’s going to give me other problems, and I’m talking about the Kwikset pin tumbler, not the SmartKey locks. These smart locks have an entire pile of security vulnerabilities. These are just dead simple to pick, and there’s not a single locksmith out there who’ll say these are tough to pick.
Is this a game changer? No way. It’s cool, it’s a useful tool, I like it, I’ll own their whole set. I own their automotive set. I think we have every single Lishi pick there is for Mr. Lishi or the other Lishi companies. We have the tools. This is just a great training aid and I firmly believe it and I’ll show you why. The other thing that is, I will admit is a bit of a game changer, is once you pick it you can actually read the pins. I can pick the lock, read the depths, so I can take this, cut it on my code machine, cut the key, and I’ve got a perfect key to fit this lock. That’s going to be a problem for a lot of people if someone can make a key and they don’t know it. That’s why you don’t put this on anything important. If you have a business or a house you don’t put a Kwikset pin tumbler on your house. It can be broken into so easily.
Terry: Whether it’s picked covert, overt, forced entry, you don’t put this on your house and the company realized that and that’s why they’ve come up with a new and improved design. When you get this stuff that they’ve been selling for 50 years it’s not a game changer. Also what’s more important, and they say, “Oh don’t do videos on this, blah, blah, blah.” The company itself, there’s a video out there by Mr. Lishi picking the lock. How can you say locksmiths don’t show this or the lock sport don’t show this? The owner of the company has a video that’s public that you can watch. What’s the big secret?
Kwikset or not, high security locks no way are they high security locks, super easy. If I’m ranting I’m ranting okay. Even the company, I could go down and take pictures and use the lock but they wouldn’t let me do a video until I had my own and I’ll do a video. Now let’s get to showing how this works, and so how I think is cool. Again, super easy to pick this lock. This is a no brainer to pick. The Lishi will help you skills. We’ll call it single pin picking, SPP, or the French method, the feel method this is cool.
Here’s the Lishi, KW1 two in one pick for five pin Kwiksets. Now I pulled the little tool, the little pick all the way back, gently insert it, you get right up to the shoulder, here’s a tension wrench, tension part, again be very gentle. What I’m feeling is which pin is binding? Kind of go almost one, two, three, four. You can see where it’s springy there. It’s kind of cool, you can hear it nicely. There we go. Really simple. Once we’ve picked it, and again I just took this out of the box, threw it on there. This is nothing special. But what’s kind of interesting is now we’ve got it, it’s a four, five, four, six, what is that? Can’t quite see. That’s the space, that’s the spot we’re at, and there’s the depths.

That’s cool, and now I can key by code. It’s a good practice. If you want to learn single pin picking this is a very, very good tool. This is a Mr. Lishi. It’s just an inexpensive tool in the scheme of things, and it does the trick very, very nice. Let’s take the tool out and I’m just going to … This is Weiser’s, which in Canada is extremely popular. These are training locks. This has only got one pin in it. Now a Kwikset key will fit into a Weiser lock, but this is not geared for it. What’s kind of cool is … Oh geez. Like I said, that’s just ready to pick. This one is slightly harder. I really don’t care where it is, I’m just feeling which pin is binding. Oh look at that, so I got to be careful this is a brand new tool. Here we go. All we’re doing is which one’s binding? I really don’t care what position. I just want to feel … That one’s binding. There you go, hear that. There we go.
This is a fun tool and it reads, which sometimes when you have multiple locks it’s nice to make a key quickly and you can open up the other locks, and it just shows you some huge security vulnerabilities. That’s why we sell a lot of the high security locks like Abloy, and Medeco, and the Primus. We sell a lot of high security locks because these are so easy to pick. We have key control in the high security locks, but you stop the amateurs who can pick those inexpensive locks quickly. Let’s not even talk about the stuff that’s coming in from Offshore Locks. This will be interesting. I’m going to play with the tool on the clones of the Kwiksets and let’s see how it does on the SmartKey locks. Interesting thing with the SmartKey locks is they use a sidebar, they don’t really have a sheer line like a pin tumbler.
This is going to be kind of fun to experiment with this with other locks it’ll fit in. Of course it’s not going to fit into the Schlage or Schlage. It’s not going to fit into a lot of other locks. It’ll do the Kwiksets for sure and it’ll do Weiser. Not meant to do Weisers but it did. Stay tuned for more videos, we’re going to have lots of fun with this.
